"This was scholar Mara Karlin’s argument about what is necessary for survival in the age of “comprehensive war.” We must convince all hostile forces, including the United States, that they might lose a war with Canada – that the upsides aren’t worth the risk."

Maybe it's satire.

Total war would be much scarier than Ukraine. Ukraine, as scary as it is, is constrained war. It's a testing ground for new weapons. But that is happening at a comfortable click for R&D. In total war, where the whole of every economy is dedicated to it, things would be even worse.

"What would it mean for a generation of young, fighting-age Canadians to take up arms, whether in Europe or in defence of our own borders? What kinds of changes would be required to allow for widespread social mobilization? What kinds of individual adjustments would be necessary – adaptations of our own self-understanding and world view, our deep-seated beliefs about what it means to live a life of purpose?"

Need a new Pearl Harbor maybe? 🤔

"What would it mean for a generation of young, fighting-age Canadians to take up arms,

It would mean they'd have to grow up and grow a pair.
I'd prefer they do that anyway, but peacefully.

What kinds of changes would be required to allow for widespread social mobilization?

They'd have to organize themselves into squads, sorted by hair colour.
Pink brigade, blue brigade, green brigade, rainbow brigade...

what it means to live a life of purpose?"

Find yourself, and purpose, in the depths of a meat-grinder.
~ OR ~
They could simply work (and even volunteer) for their community peacefully at home.

The writer in question has no military experience on his LinkedIn, but he does have a stint as a Liberal campaign communications director. And Globe And Mail is making it free to read outside their paywall so as to spread the message to as many people as possible. That tells me everything I need to know.
