Feedback round for June 2024(self)
23 commentsbyLarrySwinger
I've decided to write down a couple of feedback points each month. This feedback actually comes from neolib (from Saidit) but I'm relaying it, I think he makes good points.
  • There is no pagination. You're limited to seeing 25 links, with no history or whatever.
  • The thumbnails are full-size images, including gifs. This makes it cumbersome to use under Tor.
  • Even though there's a setting to disable animations, it doesn't seem to save. (I'm actually experiencing that myself as well.)
  • He wasn't impressed by the proximity algorithm. He set it to 5 with the other sliders at 0 and even after upvoting and downvoting a lot of stuff, he still had a top selection he didn't like. (That's very subjective, of course, but may need attention nonetheless.)

As for my own feedback, I like how subs function as tags which are created on the fly, but what's lacking is a way to subscribe to them and get a customized homepage. You can customize it with the sliders, I suppose that functions as an alternative but it isn't as precise as picking a bunch of subjects you're interested in and receiving only posts from them. Perhaps you aren't prioritizing this because the site is still small. But here's the thing. Although it's nice that subs function like tags that are created on the fly, they aren't groups which you can set up like on Reddit, where you can add your own moderators, pin posts, and have a sidebar. If people can set up their own groups here which they can manage, they can help grow the site by referring their friends to it. Now it's a single community instead of a platform, so it is bound to stay small this way.
Anyone else wanna share their feedback? Perhaps we can do this as a monthly thread.

MORE DROP SHADOW!

Wait, actually? I reduced it in the recent CSS update to being nearly flat. Should I bring it back?

No, im being a dick. 1 to 3 pix is perfect for drop shadow. we do, however, need more bevel!

I think more drop shadow can't hurt. I love big drop shadows like in TUI dialogs. I didn't notice the drop shadow at first because it's on the left side. I think it'd be better on the right side.

Here are more feedback points. I'm not sure you'll still see this but I'll forget them otherwise. Don't worry about this for now, I don't want to overwhelm you with too many points. I will copy/paste these in next month's OP.
  • Make the chat area bigger. It's good that we can pop it out in two ways now but the default size is just useless. Both the width and height should be higher. Personally I like a 60% : 40% ratio. This makes both sides of the division useful, and it still looks natural where the left area is clearly dominant to the sidebar. And there's no reason not to increase the height as that space isn't used for anything else.
  • I think the overview pages look better if the sidebar margin is consistent, even when the content of the sidebar ends. Just like inside threads. I can clearly see the Reddit influence in how the width comes back below the sidebar but it's ugly.
  • In fact maybe the sidebar could stick so that you have the chat always with you regardless of scrolling. This seems much more useful.
  • Text posts should be auto-collapsed too in the chan view.
  • How about using a bug tracker for keeping track of this feedback?

Further queue points for the next round:
  • Display your own name in the menu
  • Chat history
  • Chat bug: sometimes I need to refresh for all the messages to appear.
parentlinkreply
[-]LarrySwinger0(0|0)
  • Add a title to the webpages.
parentlinkreply
[-]LarrySwinger0(0|0)
  • Link of your conversations with someone on that user's profile page.
  • Notification history.
  • Chat bug still exists where it breaks after maximizing, then restoring it, then maximizing it again.

Better than clownflare and the 403 errors. So this place is on the right track.

I do need to add the pagation and it shouldn't be too hard.
One reason for the thumbnails being the way they are is to make the site harder to attack. It's similar to the reason go1dfish didn't have thumbnails at all on notabug. But then I realized instead of having no thumbnail I could hot link. I may need to add something in the settings for no thumbnails to make it even more like notabug.
I wonder if the tor browser supports loading="lazy" or load priority. It might not because that might reveal more information about the browser's use patterns. The site does use javascript so it probably isn't the most tor friendly site to begin with.
I do have a question about your experience with the animation setting saving. It does seem to be working for me. In your case does it forget it was applied immediately or just when you reset the browser? That also could be tor related.
I do like the idea of doing a monthly thread. Thanks for starting it.

I'd have to test it. Right now I can't find any animated gifs, surprisingly. They used to bug me so much. But when I encounter one I will turn off auto-animation and then I can say if it's my browser or not. I use enhanced tracking protection, it may have to do with that.

I heard downvotes are encouraged on this website. Time to start giving them. ;)

No, it really resets my settings. The newer versions of Firefox make it harder to tweak what happens with cookies, I tell it to store them but it doesn't seem to respond to that and I definitely have this problem with other websites as well. It often doesn't keep me logged in to websites either. I wonder if neolib is also using a Firefox-based browser. @Neol

I'm using Tor - it clears cookies/local storage on closing. Anyway, in my opinion it makes more sense to store settings in account settings when you are logged in.

Hey, that's me! I'll add another one I forgot: custom sort settings are also not saved, and you have to set them each time after logging in.

Thanks. Noted. I'm discovering that a lot of modern browsers don't keep localStorage as persistent as they used to. It shouldn't be too hard to fix because the settings are on the server to even apply the algorithm. Basically the server becomes a slave to what is in your localStorage but I'll have to change that.
A similar thing is happening with settings. The majority of them are also localStorage objects. With the gifs it is far more tempting because it is entirely a front end feature.
The main reason proximity isn't doing much is because we don't have enough people. It would take a lot more people and a lot more voting to make the space the posts are in to have any meaningful state. But it is there for when we finally do get the people for that feature to be useful.
It's one of the reasons why downvotes are encouraged here. It's more information to apply to that space, and something having zero or negative score doesn't get absolutely censored anyway. A score of zero, displayed as -1, a display of zero has one score, has 1/2 point as far as sorting is concerned. Then 1/3rd, 1/4th.

Yeah, I thought that settings are being saved in local storage/cookies. But Tor clears them after closing each time, and I think it makes more sense to store settings in db as account settings anyway, and to use local storage for not logged in lurkers.
