The Heritage Foundation has agreed since the late 1970s that all government everywhere should be reduced, everything should be deregulated, employers should pay whatever they want, companies should pollute as much as they want, foods and drugs should have anything in them the companies want to put in them, public schools should be closed, children should work from the earliest age possible, white collar crime should never be investigated properly, the death penalty should be reinstated, 7 corporate monopolies should control all goods and services and price-fixing, the rape, murder and cannibalism of children should be OK for people who can afford it, money laundering and financial fraud should be OK for wealthy people, all news media should be able to spread lies without being questioned, human trafficking should be legal, insider trading should be legal for anyone who is wealthy, all drugs should be legal, bribes should be required for all political and official activities, the murder of anyone should be legal for wealthy people, all laws should be repealed, housing should not be affordable for most people, humans without jobs should be processed into soylent green food chips to feed those who have jobs, lunch breaks should be abolished, people with guns and bladed weapons should be shot or stabbed by other people with guns and bladed weapons, with no consequences for the murderers, etc...

A true democracy is fine until the people realize they can vote to take property from others. Even the early settlers of the U.S. sometimes used a lottery system instead of a straight democracy. Of course, the major problem with elected representation is the confidence game, either by deceit or incompetance.

Also, I suspect we're both old enough to recall when voting rights were not threatened so much (in the US), and one reason for the extreme partisan Supreme Court's gutting of the Voting Rights Act, allowing racial discrimination for gerrymandering, was specifically to legalise extreme partisan gerrymandering. It's somewhat related to the Citizens United case. Pay-to-play politics destroys the effectiveness of the democracy by allowing the wealthiest few people to control politics. The only tool for Americans to reverse any of that is to overwhelm the ballot boxes and the streets in protest. Sadly 30% to 40% of the US is seriously brainwashed and/or complete idiots and/or assholes. The majority need to be more organised. An example of how important democracy is: for the 35th day in a row 250,000 Albanians (pop. only 2.7 million) have protested for the removal of Prime Minister Edi Rama because of corruption. It's embarrassing that in the US corruption is so obvious with the current administration, and there are only a few million people protesting on occasion (eg. No Kings protests). TL:DR, democracy is an important tool for change in the US if Americans would bother using it.
