Texas is freer than most places, except when it's not.

Auth-right tend to think they are the freedom party. But they just lash out at anything that offends them, the same as the left does. And they're offended if told they don't know how freedom works or that they don't have it.

It's trans-freedom. Freedom by label.

Eh, it's more complicated than that. Certainly, there are authoritarians on the right (typically the more loudly religious). But there is also Texas culture, which (in my experience) is significantly less nasty than the rust belt midwest, but has unpleasant features like an assumption that everybody has the right to nose into everybody else's business, along with other things predictible from the fact that (as a friend who is a lifelong Texan has put it), Texas is a covert matriarchy. Plus, keep in mind, the awful LBJ was a lefty, and also a product of Texas.

Ultimately, it's less "freedom by label" than a lack of real principle (which, alas, is everywhere). People are for freedom in the things they care about, and then "Yeah, but I don't care about that" syndrome kicks in, or else they carve out an exception so they can be busybodies. Blue laws remain in force from a century ago, mostly by inertia, I think.

Texas is a covert matriarchy.

Say more?

Literally everything happens or does not happen due to a behind-the-scenes coalition of middle aged and elderly mean girls who appoint themselves as being in charge of everybody's business. It's hard to describe until you've seen it in action. Once you see it, it's everywhere.

I've only been exposed to King of The Hill. Everything is basically run by Peggy Hill types?

Only seen a few eps. But from what I've seen, she'd be the small fish in the status-obsessed pond. Too low class to be more than that.

Discord is letting sextortion by satanic groups on kids and mentally ill people. That's what caused Ron Reiner's death and Savannah Guthrie moms. It's an increasing problem.
