Here's what I found. This is built more like a server.

https://www.amazon.com/PowerEdge-Server-2-20GHz-Cores-Renewed/dp/B07RJT19GS

The Framework desktop you linked to is built more like a gaming desktop if someone were allergic to graphics cards. I guess it's calling itself aimax. Facepalm. I guess that's what the absurd integrated graphics core count are for. That's not how you AI if that's what you wanted it for.

But since you mentioned a NAS a lot of these NAS's are built like web servers themselves, just smaller scale. Sense a lot of them run Linux you could also use the NAS itself as a web server. Because you are on residential internet it's up in the air which would be the bottleneck even with that.

I guess it depends on what software is running. If you ran a really poorly configured nginx or apache + a poorly configured php I guess this little guy could have all his thread pool filled before the ethernet is saturated. But if everything is running efficiently that little guy should be able to push out more data than your ethernet's uplink could handle.

More servers welcome in the comments

Considering his budget I recommend this.

That implies I can afford this.

Thanks for this post!

That refurbished server at $600CAD is actually very affordable! And it's what I was thinking of years ago too - but I don't even know where to start other than knowing a server and PC are as different beasts as a laptop and phone. I just knew I want it to have a lot of hard drive space and the ability to back it all up.

I just got a new DAS. (A dozen years ago I made a FreeNAS (now TrueNAS and corporatized) on FreeBSD but I didn't check warnings and something failed. It might be recoverable, but not with my skills.) I figure I could get a bunch of DAS to hook up to whatever server for my archive/vault.

LOL. I knew the Framework wasn't fit for this task, but I do like their ethics and strategies, even if flawed. One day I might support them by getting a laptop or something.

Today the bottleneck would likely be my Internet shared with others here, but only at times. I hope to get my own place again one day, but (((they))) don't want that for us. Doing hard contracting work I'm making 1/4 to 1/2 what I was 25 years ago animating. I'm hoping my creative projects will improve things for me, but won't be surprised if they don't because they're not corporate.

(I'm gathering resources, making plans, and channeling my creativity into developing my Santa Libertas and LeverMind shows. I have a corner for a set, my workshop, and lots of locations picked out - not to mention concepts, scripts, filmmaking gimmicks, etc. All will be shared online sooner than later. I've got some cameras, a good battery, good audio recorder, preamp, various mics, lots of lights - and need more time for preproduction planning, organizing, setting up, shooting, editing, and publishing - and animating the opening, segments, credits, etc. - as well as sorting out funding and promotional stuff. One step at a time. Plus I'm saving ~$2k for a vehicle - and eventually ideally ~$15k for a retired but not old ex-ambulance.)

I guess it depends on what software is running. If you ran a really poorly configured...

I don't know what that $129CAD ZimaBoard 232 Single Board Server Router even is or does - even after reading the description. I'm going to listen to some YouTube videos and hope to figure it out.

I don't know where to start with any of this. It's not my wheelhouse. I just know that we (folks into alternatives, autonomy, DIY, freedom, health, solutions, truth) need moar resources, including search/archive, video vaults, etc. Plus I am/was a digital hoarder. Hoarding/archiving requires the inclination, organization, time, and resources - and automation would also be good - but none of it really matters unless it can be shared, privately or not, as a pirate or not.
