Incomplete self-descriptions of trauma(self)

I'm continuing my series of random observations. Some of them my not invite discussion as much, that's just my writing style for some of these, but you're always welcome to chime in of course.

When people describe their own traumas, I have observed that they describe their experiences very briefly, and it doesn't seem to explain why it has had such an impact on them. Either that, or they get all enraged and it's hard to listen to. It makes sense as there's a lot beneath the surface, invariably. So if they just talk about it briefly and in a way that allows them to stay calm, they can't cover everything. Trauma seems to come from outrageous experiences that one also isn't able to talk about with anyone.

All of this is dubious as my sample size is small. Therefore I'm wondering what your observations are in this regard.

Have you ever tried to explain to someone a funny in-joke or euphoric experience? It always falls flat. I think most people with trauma have tried to explain it in detail many times before, but now they realize that it's futile. The basic "it fucked me up" kind of story is sufficient to achieve the maximum level of understanding you can expect.

I used to work with a guy who had pretty bad ptsd. It was a one up site with a midnight switch so some days he’d show up all white and shaking and I couldn’t just hand over and walk out.

Instead I’d end up sitting with him for a few hours as he worked through some stuff and got ahold of himself.

Sometimes he’d want to talk about whatever to distract himself. Sometimes he’d want to talk about what was in his mind.

From what he did tell me, it was clear id never really get it. I’ve seen some really shitty things but nothing compared to what he was talking about.

Point is, when he talked, we both knew he wasn’t really talking to me. He was just getting it out and I occasionally said “that’s rough buddy” to stop him slipping too far into it.

I think that’s why people don’t tend to talk about their trauma until it’s out of control.
